As more people want jewelry made from precious and semi-precious gemstones, the Earth's supply is running out. One stone that's becoming rather scarce is turquoise, so the price of turquoise has skyrocketed. Rather than charge their customers higher prices, many vendors are using other, cheaper stones (often howlite) that are dyed a pretty aqua color to resemble turquoise. I never use phony turquoise in my jewelry--it simply doesn't have the same energy or feel as real turquoise. I also do my best to ensure that the stones in my jewelry are not dyed. However, you get what you pay for. This is why my turquoise jewelry is not, and cannot ever be, cheap.
I sometimes wonder about the effects of mining on our beloved planet Earth. All gemstones possess an energetic component, an electromagnetic signature (evidenced by the fact that certain gemstones, such as various types of quartz and tourmaline, are being used in Far Infrared mattresses for the healing emanations they emit, especially when exposed to heat). There must be a limit to how many minerals can be removed from the Earth before some kind of undesirable energetic shift occurs.
Nevertheless, I continue to make beaded jewelry. Why? I need beauty in my life, and creating these pieces is a relaxing and meditative experience for me. Also, I'm hardly a major retailer, and the amount of gemstones I use is minimal.
