"Why Do I Need to Take
Nutritional Supplements?
And What Kind Are Best?"

...here are some protocols
I use for myself.

by Nenah Sylver, PhD

WHY SUPPLEMENT?

Some people, especially those new to natural or holistic health, are very surprised or even disturbed to learn that they need to take nutritional supplements in addition to eating a healthy diet, and might need more than a simple vitamin and mineral supplement if they want to achieve optimal health.

Why, indeed?

Almost anyone who's serious about their health realizes that we're in big trouble. Our farmland lacks essential nutrients, which creates deficiencies in our crops and thus our bodies. As far back as 1936, the United States Senate was informed of the serious depleted condition of our soil. On June 1st of that year, a Mr. Fletcher presented a paper to the second session of the 74th Congress. The paper, reprinted by the United States Government Printing Office in Washington, DC, was known as United States Senate Document #264. It read in part:

Do you know that most of us today are suffering from certain dangerous diet deficiencies which cannot be remedied until the depleted soils from which our foods come are brought into proper mineral balance? The alarming fact is that foods, fruits and vegetables and grains, now being raised on millions of acres of land that no longer contain enough of certain needed minerals, are starving us—no matter how much of them we eat! . . . Laboratory tests prove that the fruits, the vegetables, the grains, the eggs, and even the milk and the meats of today are not what they were a few generations ago. No man of today can eat enough fruits and vegetables to supply his system with the minerals he requires for perfect health, because his stomach isn’t big enough to hold them! . . . No longer does a balanced and fully nourishing diet consist merely of so many calories or certain vitamins or a fixed proportion of starches, proteins, or carbohydrates. We now know that it must contain, in addition, something like a score of mineral salts. It is bad news to learn from our leading authorities that 99% of the American people are deficient in these minerals, and that a marked deficiency in any one or more of the important minerals actually results in disease. Any upset of the balance, any considerable lack of one or another element, however microscopic the body requirement may be, and we sicken, suffer, shorten our lives. . . .

[A medical doctor named Charles Northen] made an extensive study of the soil. . . . “Bear in mind,” says Dr. Northen, “that minerals are vital to human metabolism and health—and that no plant or animal can appropriate to itself any mineral which is not present in the soil upon which it feeds. . . . We know that vitamins are complex chemical substances which are indispensable to nutrition, and that each of them is of importance for the normal function of some special structure of the body. Disorder and disease result from any vitamin deficiency. It is not commonly realized, however, that . . . in the absence of minerals they [vitamins] have no function to perform. Lacking vitamins, the system can make some use of minerals, but lacking minerals, vitamins are useless. . . . The truth is that our foods vary enormously in value, and some of them aren’t worth eating as food. For example, vegetation grown in one part of the country may assay 1,100 parts per billion of iodine, as against 20 in that grown elsewhere. . . . Some of our lands, even in a virgin state, never were well balanced in mineral content. . . .” We must rebuild our soils: Put back the minerals we have taken out. That sounds difficult but it isn’t. Neither is it expensive. Therein lies the short cut to better health and longer life. . . .

Our environment has become extremely unbalanced with toxins of all kinds. There are pesticides on even our organic food (blown in from non-organic crops), coal burning industries spewing mercury and other contaminants into the air, drugs and other chemical run-off substances in our drinking water—the list is endless. Plus, there are huge amounts of radioactive substances in the air now from the nuclear power meltdowns in Japan, at levels much higher than most of the mainstream press reports.

A stream that becomes clogged with leaves, sticks and debris becomes plugged and the water cannot flow. When our bodies accumulate toxins, they are like that stream. Cells stangle in their own waste materials: toxins are unable to exit and nutrients cannot enter to nourish the cell. When enough individual cells malfunction, the entire tissue groups made up of those cells cannot function, either, and then entire glands, organs, and systems break down.

Cleaning out the body's elimination channels so wastes can be removed is a fundamental principle of natural healing. This is the basis of what are called detoxification protocols. Which brings me to my next point.

WHICH SUPPLEMENTS and PROTOCOLS?

"Why can’t I simply take one or two things and get well?" people often want to know.

In our "pop-a-pill, instant fix" society, it is easy to want to take only one or two types of supplement, or do only one or two modalities to correct a condition that may have taken years to develop. Natural health is based not on an "instant fix," but on giving the body what it needs so that it can heal itself. Toward that goal, taking several different types of nutritional supplements can make sense when the body is out of balance. If the body tremendously is out of balance, chances are it is lacking in many basic nutrients it needs to perform its functions well. That is why there are several complementary approaches to wellness.

Nutritional supplements can be roughly divided into four categories:

(1) Detoxification/Cleansing
(2) Pathogen Removal
(3) Direct Immune Support
(4) Rebuilding with Nutrients

I will summarize each in turn. Keep in mind that there is bound to be some overlap in function among the four categories, since the body is very complex.

(1) Detoxification/Cleansing. The body produces many toxic waste materials daily in the course of its normal metabolic functions. Under the best of circumstances, it has to work very hard to dispose of these waste materials. But when you’re under emotional or physical stress, eating poorly, or fighting infection, the body has an even harder time ridding itself of waste materials. All illness gets its start—or becomes worse—when the body is riddled with toxins. This is why herbs to cleanse the system can be so helpful during this time. The colon, kidneys, liver, and entire lymph system need support to do their job!
For this function, I make
green smoothies [more to come]. I also do sauna therapy. The Far Infrared sauna cabinet in my living room is the SAUNEX. www.saunex.com

(2) Pathogen Removal. A person who has been doing detoxification and cleansing programs is on the right track: a body with a balanced pH is less likely to provide a breeding ground for microbes. However, sometimes we become so debilitated that we can use a little extra help. There are many herbal and other natural health formulas that deal with pathogens but do not disrupt the body’s normal function—for instance, which do not kill the beneficial flora in the intestines. Ideally, we should be keeping our body in pristine condition so microbes don’t have a chance to flourish. However, even if one’s diet, lifestyle, attitude, etc. is impeccable, sometimes the body needs a little help to get back on track. This is when it can be quite useful to take natural substances.
For this function, I take a variety of anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial herbs and essential oils, as well as Colloidal Silver. I also use Rife Therapy.

(3) Direct Immune Support. It’s great that something is available to effectively deal with microbes. Now it’s important to encourage the body's cells to rejuvenate, so all the organs, glands, nerves, muscles, bones and other tissues can do their job.

For this function, Rife sessions can also be quite useful (especially with particular types of frequency devices). Most importantly, I take Laminine.

(4) Rebuilding with Nutrients. This is crucial! Before cleansing, during detox, and after the body has cleared itself of dangerous pathogens and pollutants, it needs many different types of nutrients to grow healthy tissue and perform its immune functions properly. Nowadays we simply can’t get what we need solely from food, due to depleted soil and sub-standard farming practices. Numerous herbs, vitamins, minerals, and other substances give the body what it needs so people can remain in good health even if they’re aging.
For this function, I take various Vitamins, Minerals
[more to come], Probiotics (very important!), and Laminine.

Healing oneself takes time and patience.
Healing with natural means requires care.
But the rewards are great!
