Essential Oils Help
the Gums and Teeth
I have used the following formula for my own gum infection. When my dog had such a severe gum infection that the side of her mouth swelled out like a balloon, I mixed up the following preparation of essential oils in a neutral carrier oil and applied it to her mouth. Here's the recipe:
Ingredients
2 to 4 ounces of "carrier" oil: almond (preferably), sesame, or other light vegetable oil (it should be organic, cold-pressed and preservative-free)
about 8 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
about 8 drops of thyme essential oil
about 8 drops of oregano essential oil
about 6 drops of tea tree essential oil
8-10 drops of peppermint essential oil
The schedule of application was as follows:
Applied to the gums, via a cotton swab, 3 to 4 times a day for 2 days.
After that, once in the morning and once at night for about a week.
After just one day, the swelling began to diminish and the redness decreased. After a week, the infection was gone. My dog, who does not like having her mouth opened by anyone, objected. However, after 3 days, she tolerated my swabbing her gums because she recognized that it was helping to clear the infection.
Why Use Those Particular Oils?
The "big 4" essential oils that are anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal are eucalyptus, thyme, oregano, and tea tree. Peppermint is not quite as strong, but will add a pleasing flavor to the mix.
Be Careful When Using Essential Oils With Animals!
Remember that dogs have a highly developed sense of smell. What is pleasant for you can be overpowering to them. So, I made sure to dilute anything I used for my dog. (Note that cats metabolize very differently from dogs and humans, so some essential oils that are good for us can be toxic to cats. Kristin Leigh Bell has written an excellent book on aromatherapy for animals.)
